Portland Head Light

Completed in1791, the Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Portland Head Light is at the entrance to the main shipping channel into Portland Harbor which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. What was once the lighthouse keepers' house is now a maritime museum situated in Fort Williams Park.

George Washington directed construction to begin in 1787. Whale oil lamps were first used for illumination. The Portland Head Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
