 From 2013 - Sunrise on Haleakala on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Haleakala is a dormant volcano rising 10,023 feet in the Haleakala National Park. The name comes from the legend that the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun there to lengthen the day..
In order to view sunrise on Haleakala, you will need to make reservations on the National Park Service website usually far in advance of the day you are traveling. You will need to leave early as parking is limited and it takes almost 2 hours to make the drive from Ka'anapali to the summit. In 2019 we missed our reservation because it snowed on Haleakala. For the adventurous, you can book a tour to ride a bike down the winding, twisting road that leads to Haleakala.
