Celebrating 8 years since my move to Prescott Arizona. Granite Mountain as seen from a trail in the Granite Basin Recreation Area. Granite Mountain covers 12 square miles and tops out at 7,628 feet, It was once named Gurley Mountain for the first governor of the Arizona Territory. The sheer granite cliff is one the best locations for rock climbing in Arizona. Portions of it are closed from February through July to protect the nesting of Peregrine Falcons.

Today we go from the Stockyard Historic District of Fort Worth to the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Arizona USA. The title refers to a line in Chancey Williams’ song Fastest Gun in Town. Now a country and western star, Chancey went to the National High School Rodeo Finals as well as the College National Finals. He joined Chris Ledoux as the only two who have individuals to compete in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and later perform on it’s main stage.

On a visit to Texas in 2008, we decided to go watch the Fort Worth Cattle Drive located in Fort Worth's Stockyards National Historic District. The Cattle Drives occur twice daily and are considered historically accurate based on cattle drives which occurred after the Civil War. At that time longhorn cattle were worth $1 a head in Texas,, while earning about $40 each in the northeast. The profits from the three month trek to railheads in Kansas helped revive the Texas economy. For more information visit https://www.fortworth.com/the-herd/about-the-herd/history-of-cattle-drives/.

Gross Pointe Light Station

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1976), the Gross Pointe Light Station in Evanston, Illinois was constructed in 1873 partially in response to the sinking of the Lady Elgin (killing over 300 people) in 1860,

The light was decommissioned in 1941 to avoid air raids in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The light station was reactivated in 1945 and is currently operated by the Lighthouse Park District of Evanston, Illinois.

The site of the light station is thought to be the site where Marquette landed in 1674 on his trip along the west coast of Lake Michigan. The light is one of only 70 Fresnel lenses that are still operational in the United States.
