Taken on this date in 2015, during a trip from San Diego, California to Prescott, Arizona. The Golden Gate Bridge towers above the Fort Point Historic Site. Originally built in 1794 as a fort to support the Presidio de San Francisco by the Spanish as Castillo de San Joaquin. The fort was abandoned in 1835 by the Mexican army after winning its independence from Spain in 1821.
The abandoned fort was captured by US Forces led by Charles Fremont, Kit Carson and their followers during the Mexican-American War. The Fort was declared a National Historic Site in 1970. Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge started in January 1933 and was completed in April 1937 before opening on May 27, 1937. #FortPointHistoricSite #SanFrancisco #GoldenGateBridge #CastillodeSanJoaquin
