The moon rises over Navy Pier in Chicago. Originally named Municipal Pier, the design by Charles Summer Frost was based on the 1909 Plan of Chicago by Daniel Burnham. It was renamed Navy Pier in 1927 to honor World War I Navy Veterans. In 194 the Pier was used by the Navy for training. It is purported that President Bush trained there.
Navy Pier is the 2nd most visited tourist stop in Chicago, attracting over nine million visitors a year. #NavyPier #Chicago #Moonrise #LakeMichigan

The El Tovar Hotel located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. First opened in 1905 (before the Grand Canyon became federally protected - it was made a National Park in 1911) was operated by the Harvey Hotel Group It was named after Pedro de Tovar who reported rumors of large rivers in the area, inspiring the expedition of Garcia Lopez de Cardenas who discovered the canyon. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1974) and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987,

Even when the snow is on the thin side, the competition is held as witnessed in 2012. It is amazing the detail and quality of the sculptures. I strongly encourage you to visit this year's competition which will be held February 1-5 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. They finish sculpting and judging is on Saturday morning. It is always interesting to watch them finish, or as they are working on their art on Friday night. For more information visit https://www.visitlakegeneva.com/winterfest/

Built in 1930, the building was the tallest in Chicago until the Richard J Daley building was erected in 1965. It is a National Historic Landmark. The commodity exchange it houses was originally established in 1848 to trade in agricultural commodities. If you look closely, you will see a figure at the top of the building. It is Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture sculpted by John H. Storrs.
LaSalle Street is the heart of the financial district in Chicago. It gets a canyon look due to the tall steep buildings (many designed to look like Greek temples) that line the street from Madison to Jackson. #Chicago #LaSalleStreetCanyon #Ceres #ChicagoBoardofTrade From January 2015 - Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Sedona, Arizona.
Inspired by the Empire State Building, Marguerite Brunswig Staude sought to build the chapel in 1932 in Budapest Hungry. She enlisted Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright) but the beginning of World War II thwarted those efforts. Getting help from Senator Barry Goldwater, Staude obtained a special use permit to build the chapel in her native Arizona on land in the Coconino National Forest in Sedona. Built at a cost of $300,000 the chapel was completed in 1956. #ChapeloftheHolyCross #Sedona #Snow #FrankLloydWright #CoconinoNationalForest Could not make it to Sedona today - to much snow to travel safely. From January 2016 - my first winter in Arizona. It has been awhile since I've been to the Grand Canyon - hoping to get back there this month when there is snow on the ground again. Maybe this weekend.
