52 feet tall, resting on Kilauea Point 180 feet above the ocean, the Kilauea Lighthouse was commissioned May 1, 1913. The lighthouse was restored in 2013. The original 8,000 pound light was designed to float on 260 pounds of mercury. Because of the dangerous properties of mercury the light, which can be seen for 22 miles out into the sea, no longer rotates, but is lit for special ceremonies.
In 2013 the lighthouse was dedicated to Senator Daniel K. Inouye. These pictures, and others, are available for sale. Message me for more information. #KilaueaLighthouse #Kauai #Hawaii #Lighthouse
