The Prescott VA Hospital framed by Thumb Butte on the left and Granite Mountain on the right. The VA was originally Fort Whipple name after Amiel Weeks Whipple who was mortally wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. The fort (which at the time was comprised of tents was relocated from it's original location in Chino Valley in May of 1864. From May of 1885 to July 1886 Whipple was home to the Buffalo Soldiers. In April 1898 a delegation of 200 volunteers as the Arizona Cowboy Regiment left Fort Whipple for San Antonio to fight in the war with Spain. They would later be called the Rough Riders.
The main hospital was built in between 1938 an 1939. Fort Whipple was certified on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. #PrescottVA #FortWhipple #BuffaloSoldiers #RoughRiders #ArizonaCowboyRegiment #PrescottArizona
