Gross Pointe Light Station

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1976), the Gross Pointe Light Station in Evanston, Illinois was constructed in 1873 partially in response to the sinking of the Lady Elgin (killing over 300 people) in 1860,
 
The light was decommissioned in 1941 to avoid air raids in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The light station was reactivated in 1945 and is currently operated by the Lighthouse Park District of Evanston, Illinois.
 
The site of the light station is thought to be the site where Marquette landed in 1674 on his trip along the west coast of Lake Michigan. The light is one of only 70 Fresnel lenses that are still operational in the United States.
