The El Tovar Hotel located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. First opened in 1905 (before the Grand Canyon became federally protected - it was made a National Park in 1911) was operated by the Harvey Hotel Group It was named after Pedro de Tovar who reported rumors of large rivers in the area, inspiring the expedition of Garcia Lopez de Cardenas who discovered the canyon. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1974) and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987,
