With the USS Midway as a backdrop, the Sailor Kissing Statue reminds all who see it of the joy of hearing WWII had ended. The statue is a take on Alfred Eisenstaedt's photograph which was published in Life Magazine shortly after it was taken on August 14, 1945. I always thought the picture was of a sailor kissing his nurse girl friend. However, neither Petty Officer First Class George Mendonsa, nor dental assistant Greta Zimmer knew each other before the famous kiss.
