Picture from 2013 – Fort Popham, a Civil War era defense fortification at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg, Maine. In October 1969 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Construction began in 1861 to protect Augusta and ship builders from attacks by the Confederates, though it saw no combat. Before the fort was built, there was a minor fort here during the Revolutionary War and saw minor action in the War of 1812. The original design included a 3rd row which wasn’t completed because forts like this (similar to Fort Sumter) being easily destroyed by new artillery. #USA250 #FortPopham #AmericanRevolution #Warof1812 #AmericanCivilWar #PhippsburgMaine #KennebecRiver
