The Colorado River can be seen from just off the Desert View Watch Tower, the eastern most point at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The Watch Tower, built in 1932 was designed by Mary Colter and was influenced by Puebloean people of the Colorado Plateau. This is one of my favorite spots at the Grand Canyon South Rim.

The Watch Tower is located 23 miles east of the Grand Canyon Village on Highway 64. It is the first stop if you enter the park from the east entrance off of State Route 89 near Cameron. I highly recommend you visit this spot when at the Grand Canyon. To the right of the tower is a spot where you can hike down for better views of the Colorado River and the interior of the canyon.

Four Peaks is located in the Mazatzal Mountains in the Four Peaks Wilderness in the Tonto National Forest. The tallest of the peaks is Brown Peak (7,659 feet); it is the highest point in Maricopa County. The three other peaks, Brother, Sister and Amethyst range in height from 7,526 to 7,644 feet. The range is home to black bears, ring-tailed cats, skunks, and coyotes.
Four Peaks is the site of an amethyst mine which produces a unique Siberian Red Amethyst which is only found in Four Peaks and the Ural Mountains.
Three local brewers started The Four Peaks Brewing Company in 1996, Their Kiltlifter Scottish Ale is my favorite Ten years later the trio sold the company to Anheuser-Busch .

A spectacular view of the sun rising above the clouds atop the Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui. To witness this beautiful event you need first to make reservations several months in advance as they limit entrance to the park for sunrise viewing. Then you need to get up early (2am or so) for the drive up the crater to secure parking at the top. Bring something warm, because temperatures that early in the morning can be in the mid 30's.
Sacred to native Hawaiians, Haleakala means "house of the sun". Nearly 7 miles across, 2 miles wide and 2,600 feet deep theinterior is filled with volcanic cones. Pu'u Ula'ula is the volcano's summit reaching 10,023 feet above sea level.
Haleakala National Park is home to more endangered species thant any other United States National Park. If you are interested in hiking, one of the park's trails starting at Keonehe'he'e begins an 11 mile trek into the crater and across the valley floor ending at Halemau'u. The last eruption was between 400-600 years ago.
