Boulder (Hoover) Dam Gates Close
January 31, 1935 On this date in 1935 workers on the Boulder Dam (as it was known then) began closing the 3-million pound gate that would stop the flow of the Colorado River creating Lake Mead. Originally named during the construction during the Hoover Administration, the name was changed by President Franklin Roosevelt to Boulder Dam. We All Hike On A Red Submarine
January 30, 2026 Picture from this date in 2016 A view from Submarine Rock in Sedona, Arizona The Submarine Rock Trail starts from the Broken Arrow Trail off Morgan Road east off SR179. To access Submarine Rock take the Broken Arrow Trail about 1 mile where the trail will break off between the route to Submarine Rock. Once you are done at Submarine Rock and return to the Broken Arrow trail you can turn left and head out to Chicken Point. You’ll probably see many a Pink Jeep Tour riding the trail. When you get neat Chicken Point look up to the right and you’ll see the white line that many a mountain biker rides – google them on You Tube. #SubmarineRock #SedonaArizona #HikeSedona #BrokenArrowTrail #ChickenPoint #HikeSedona #HikeArizona January 29, 1944

Picture from this week in 2017 A view at sunset of the San Francisco Peaks from the clubhouse looking over the fairway of the 18th hole of the Club at Prescott Lakes. Taken while participating in the chili cookoff which of course I didn’t win. Picture from January 2015 Opened in 1992, the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge is the longest 2 lane, single span. Steel-arch bridge in North America. It was built to relieve congestion of traffic in Arizona State route 188 which was located atop the Lake Roosevelt Dam. The Roosevelt Dam route was designed to accommodate the width of 2 Model T autos. As vehicle widths expanded, that road was limited to 1 way traffic until the new bridge opened. The American Consulting Engineers list the bridge as one of the top 12 bridge designs in the United States. The steel from the bridge was repurposed from the Washington Street elevated in Boston when it was torn down in 1987. #RooseveltLakeBridge #RooseveltLake #Arizona #AmericanConsultingEngineers #VisitArizona Aztec Ceremony – Puerto Vallarta

Grandview Point just after sunrise Sunday January 18, 2026. Located towards the east end of the Grand Canyon National Park at a 7,400 foot elevation. Best known (well I didn’t know that until now) as the site of the 1890’s Grandview Hotel. Serving as a copper mining hub for copper mining on Horseshoe Mesa, the hotel was built by Pete Berry. The hotel was closed (and no longer exists) in 1929 after the 1903 opening of the El Tovar Hotel. #GrandCanyonNationalPark #GrandviewPoint #HorseshoeMesa #GrandviewHotel #ElTovarHotel #VisitArizona #VisitGrandCanyon #sunrise #tree Tonto Natural Bridge State Park
Picture from January 20, 2026 Tonto Natural Bridge is considered to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. Situated in the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park (between Pine-Strawberry and Payson on SR87, the tunnel is 400 feet long and is 150 feet at its widest point. First documented by Scotsman David Gowan in 1877 while hiding from the Apache tribe, Gowan eventually persuaded his family to emigrate and move to the area. Gowan’s family lived near the bridge until 1948. The lodge building the Gowans built is part of the National Register of Historic Places. In 1948 Glen Randall purchased the bridge, the lodge and 160 acres of surrounding area. After his death in 1967 his wife sold the property which then became a state park. #TontNaturalBridge #TontoNaturalBridgeStatePark #TontoNationalForest #TravertineBridge #DavidGowan #GlenRandall #Pine #Strawberry #Payson #VisitArizona |
